Our Process

Our Approach to Paint Making

Inspired by nature and made by hand, we craft our paint in small batches the traditional way, assuring the quality and vivid reflective nature of handmade paint.  The Stoneground Paint Co. combines the world’s finest pigments with a binder made of only locally sourced organic honey and the world’s finest gum arabic.  We forego the use of fillers, additives, and extenders which muddy and dull paint unnecessarily.

Lost Connection

Historically, artists had a deep understanding of their art supplies, often sourcing their own pigments, and making their own paints. Their binders were made by hand, and pigments sought out based on their properties, effects, or rarity. Their artwork was only as good as the supplies they created for themselves. We are passionate about re-establishing the lost connection between artists and their supplies.

Our traditional approach to paint-making without the use of fillers, extenders, or preservatives results in bright, clear colours with beautiful luminosity and depth. The use of single pigments leaves colour mixing in the hand of the artist, helping to avoid muddy colours. Our curated palettes are designed to inspire creative use of colour, allowing artists to confidently experiment with a variety of pigments and the unique properties each pigment brings to a work of art.

Why Single Pigment?

Single pigment paints help artists learn colour theory and colour mixing techniques with confidence, eliminating the common frustration of muddy colours and paintings that seem dull in appearance.

Why Honey?

Our binder contains the world’s finest gum arabic and honey sourced from local prairie beekeepers.  Honey is known to be one of nature’s best preservatives, allowing Stoneground to create a watercolour and gouache paint without the use of unnecessary filler or additives, resulting in a smooth application every time.

Why Handmade?

Handmade paint is unique in that the process is labour intensive and each pan of paint is poured over the course of several weeks.  Our paint makers combine ingredients with a glass muller on a stone slab, ensuring the even distribution of pigment particles through our binder.  The colours we use are chosen from a veritable rainbow of the world’s most luminous hues and we ensure that every pan of Stoneground paint is loaded with pigment.
