About Handmade Watercolour

About Us

The Stoneground Paint Co. is a family-owned and operated business located in Regina, Saskatchewan. Our signature product is a handmade, artist-quality watercolour paint inspired by nature and ground by hand. We craft our paint in small batches the traditional way, assuring the quality and vivid reflective nature of handmade watercolour.

Our traditional approach to paint-making without the use of fillers, extenders, or preservatives results in bright, clear colours with beautiful luminosity and depth. The use of single pigments leaves colour mixing in the hand of the artist, helping avoid muddy paint. Our curated palettes are designed to inspire creative use of colour, allowing artists to confidently experiment with a variety of pigments and the unique properties each pigment brings to a work of art.

Eric Rowe, Jenny Rowe, and Russel Clarke.

The Stoneground Paint Co. was established in 2016 when Eric Rowe, a self-taught watercolour artist with over 40 years experience, expressed his dismay with mass-produced, factory made watercolour paint. Upon using his first batch of handmade watercolour, using binder he created from a hundreds-year-old recipe, Eric decided to launch Stoneground in order to re-establish the lost connection between artists and quality, handmade art supplies. Each pigment is carefully considered and tested by Eric, and his familiarity with colour theory drives the creation of Stoneground’s popular pre-made palette collections.

Eric’s eldest daughter Jenny Rowe grew up watching her father paint in his studio and her fascination with art eventually led to a degree in Art History, and a graduate degree in History. The history of watercolour, art supplies, and pigments is Jenny’s passion, and she now works alongside her Dad as the Creative Director and Principal Paint-Maker at The Stoneground Paint Co.

After spending several years in the tech industry, Russel Clarke joined Stoneground full time in 2018 in order to help with the increased demand for the company’s handmade watercolour. Russel….. Jenny and Russel’s teenage daughter, Rowan, can be found in Stoneground’s studio happily making the occasional batch of watercolour, or painting with her grandfather, Eric.
